The way points of this running / walking route:
walking on sidewalk down Longstreet to Sawmill; head westerly on Sawmill towards Lead Mine Road
just after the paved sidewalk stops, turn left into the Capital Greenway trail (trail running here to give the dogs some energy release)
several bridges to cross, good spots on the creek to let the dogs play in the water (be careful there are no other hikers / dogs off leash around!!) several rocks to climb over and roots making trail intermediate for running with dogs
rejoin the Gateway path, a paved trail with heavy bike and dog-walking traffic but no cars
do the 2mile loop around Shelly Lake in either direction....the water fountain is closer in the counter-clockwise direction :)
be sure to water the dogs at least once (here, water fountians, rest rooms) but be careful crossing the bridge as all the geese and ducks are just overwhelming with the breed's instinctual bird-hunting tendencies
the bench on top of the dam is a good place to stop to water the dogs from bottles if you've brought water/dish with which to water them; bench gives you a clear view of any approaching dogs, bikes, etc. and besides, there's a nice breeze up there :)
the dogs will enjoy running on the grass of the multi-purpose field but there are often ducks, geese and disapproving passers-by preventing letting the dogs off leash here (for a bathroom stop for those who won't go on-leash?)
