The way points of this running / walking route:
Start at the Muraco School Parking lot off of Washington St. at Bates Rd. Walk toward the school then to your right past the playground down a hill to the bike path follow the path toward Leonard Field
You will walk the bike path to Leonard Field - a small pond will be on your right. From here continue to follow the trail along the Aberjona River toward Cross St. this is the Industrial part of Winchester
You will cross Cross St. and walk along the Aberjona in Davidson Park, the train tracks will be on your left. Continue through Davidson Park to Washington St. and turn left.
You will now be at Washington St. Turn left and head down Montvale Ave toward Woburn (Caution high speed traffic on Washington St.)
Follow Washington St. to D St. by the Calvary Cemetery. Turn Left and walk through the cemetery ...to the end of the street. Turn right and continue on Central St to Montvale. A nice quiet neighborhood.
Turn left onto Montbvale Ave - just across the train tracks by the marshy area on your right there will be Nashua St. on your left. Turn onto Nashua st. , round the corner and follow to Holton St.
At the end of Nashua St. Turn left onto Holton use extreme caution here (Fast moving traffic and narrow street without sidewalk) Keep to the shoulder and be careful. Follow Holton to Blueberry Hill Rd. and turn right. (there will be a moving truck company just after the turn)(You can't miss it). Turn right before it.
Foloow Blueberry Hill Rd. Up Blueberry hill for a sweeping view of Woburn and Winchester, turn left onto Skyview Lane and back on to Blueberry Hill Rd. Then turn left onto Bradford Rd, walk to the end of the cul d'sac and you get a great view of Winchester and the Boston Skyline.
At the end of Blueberry hill rd. turn left and then right onto Carter St. which winds around to Bryant St. - from there turn left onto Conn St. and you will come out onto route 38 (main St. ) in Woburn. Go straight onto Ash St. (Careful Crossing route 38) (if you need a bite to eat Bill and Bob's roast beef is down the street on your left on Main St.) (Highly Recmmended)....follow Ash st. around to Richardson St., bang a left and you will hit Arlington Road At Horn Pond. A local recreational pond/walking area.
At Horn Pond you turn right onto Arlington Rd. follow the sidewalk along the pond to the trail on your left....at the far end of the pond. Follow the walkers...
Follow the trail along the lake to the Causeway, follow the Causeway which used to be Woburn PKWY (parkway) now closed to traffic excepte bicycles and rollerbladers/dog walkers/walkers, joggers. You will pass a nice park....(by the Woburn Lions Club) and a wooden statue of a famous indian
Follow the main path around to the Power Station and bear left....to the parking lot along the Gold Star Mothers pathway through the pine forest. From here you will hit Lake Ave. follow lake ave back to the intersection of Arlington Rd, and turn right onto Lake Terrace. At the End of Lake Terrace you will find a bike trail that will lead to Sylvester Ave and Middlesex St. in Winchester
Follow the bike trail to Sylvester Ave which becomes Middlesex St. follow the bike path sign off to the left fork and follow it through the parkland to Lake Ave and Wedge Pond at the intersection of Skillings Rd, and Route 38 - If you need water or something to eat, there's the Town Pantry up the road on route 38 to you left on the right. And stop and shop across the intersection. Turn right onto Lake St. and palmer st. and you'll pass by Wedge pond and the Packard Tennis Courts on your left.
At the intersection of Wilwood and Palmer St. in the middle of the intersection you'll see a four way stop and a island with a plaque on it. This marks the spot of the Middlesex Canal , one of the oldest U.S. canals
From the Middlesex Canal Historic Plaque/Marker, turn left and then another left onto Pine St. which works its way around to glengary rd. by the shore of Wedge Pond. This is a historic preservation district in Winchester with beautiful old homes on the lake shore with the White 1st Congregational Church rising over the water. You will end up on Dix st. and turn left. and pass the white church which is the tallest building in town - and one of the oldest.
From here cross the Town Common to the rotary (Center of town ) then right under the train bridge onto Route 38 - Main St. into the business distrcit. Pass Starbucks and Catch a FallinG Star toy Store, and just past the Citizens Bank turn right onto the bike path, follow the bike path along Mystic Valley parkway until you see a footbridge on your right. Cross the footbridge to Ginn Field (Playground here for the kids) and walk along the path by the ballfields - railroad track to Bacon St. At Bacon St. turn right
At Bacon St. Turn right and follow to the flashing light at Everett Ave - Turn right onto Central St. and follow to the T intersection at the end. At the right go down Rangely Rd. (supposedly a private way but everyone uses it anyway) which will wind you through a woodsy area and some beautiful old homes and mansions.) to Church St. At Church St. Turn right and then right at Waterfield Rd. (a good place for lunch is D'agastinos' ) on your right. Follow Waterfield Rd. to the Post Office and turn left onto Thompson St. Follow Thompson St to the end back to the business district (main St. route 38) turn left to the rotary and then right onto Mt. Vernon St. You will walk past Lucia's ristorante (Italian) and the Fire Station on your left. Turn right at Converse Pl. and the mill pond will be on your left. You can see the island and the Library across the pond. as well as Lincoln School rising on the hill across the pond. Walk along the bike path sidewlak around Coverse Pl, China Sky Chinese will be on your right you will come back to Route 38 and be at the Waterfall and the Site of the first house. Karol's Ice cream and yogurt is on your right on the corner (Great Ice Cream)
From here you will turn left cross the old Converse Bridge (built int he 1630's) and follow the footpath along the mill pond to the Library. At the Library follow the path to your left and you will see the town hall building on your right (the big Red brick tower) . Carefully cross Mt vernon St. by the Firestation (on your left) and continue down the bike path. You will follow the Aberjona River and the Jenks Senior Center will be onyour right. Judkins pond and the Arthur Griffin Museum and Center for the Photographic Arts will come into view across Judkins Pond, the Winchester High School on your left. At the end of the path turn left and walk along Judkins Pond on skillings Rd. to the traffic Light. Cross skillings rd. here and continue across to the path along the high shcool and the railroad tracks. this will take you to Spruce St. Follow Spruce St. up to Oak St. the train tracks will be on your left. Turn right on Oak St. and a quick left onto Holland St. This is the Little Italy Section of Winchester - an old italian neighborhood which used to have corner stores (many homes look like old stores, because thats what they used to be) You'll hit Swanton St. (Swanton St. Deli is a good snack stop)....Cross Swanton Carefully....then continue straight onto Florence....Follow Florence to the end and turn left on Irving St. - then a quick right at the entrance to Muraco School You have completed the almost 10 mile loop
