Tag Definitions

Commute
A route that uses the most direct cycle friendly route between start point and end point.

Recreational
A route that uses the best roads in the area for the enjoyment of bicycle riding. Little emphasis was put on transportation goals in the construction of this route

Training
A route that uses roads and trails on which there will be as little interruption as possible from traffic control devices, traffic or other recreational users (including pedestrians, roller bladders, other cyclist on different types of rides). The route allows the user to focus on specific objectives without interruption.

Onroad
The route uses roads. Riders will mix with cars and trucks on this route.

Offroad
The route which uses segregated trails which separate riders from motor vehicle traffic.

MTB
A route using unimproved off road trail. Riders should expect rocks, tree roots, low hanging branches, non-bridged water crossings and other natural hazards

Urban
Route uses roads on which other traffic is the norm. Riders should expect frequent traffic control devices, many cross streets and cross traffic, multiple lanes in the same direction, and support services (gas stations, quick marts, police) to be nearby.

Rural
Route uses roads on which other traffic is the minimal. Riders should expect uncontrolled intersections, infrequent cross streets and cross traffic, single travel lanes in the same direction, and support services (gas stations, quick marts, police) to be generally unavailable.

Scenic
Route will take riders to or along road and trails with enjoyable aspects like vistas, rivers, bluffs, forests, lakes, and architecture.

Smooth
Road and trail conditions are in good repair and riders can ride with little regard to quality of the surface.

Rough
Road and trail conditions are in poor condition, either by design or neglect. Riders should expect to need to alter the way they ride to adjust for the conditions.

Steep
At least one grade of 7% or greater will be encountered along the route.

Basic
Novice riders of any ability or confidence level will be able to utilize this route.

Intermediate
This route requires a rider which has developed at least some degree of confidence in mixing with motor vehicles and navigating terrain obstacles.

Difficult
This route requires a rider which has developed a great deal of skill mixing with high speed motor vehicle traffic in less than ideal road conditions. This category would include the most severe of Mountain Bike track.

Low traffic
Riders should expect to mix with a minimal amount of other road users.

High traffic
Riders should expect to mix with other road users at every point of the ride. Both passing, on-coming, and at cross streets.

Safe
Road and trail infrastructure provides good opportunities to avoid conflict with other users or other dangers. Examples might include wide shoulders, marked bike lanes, low speeds, and/or plentiful traffic control.

Unsafe
Road and trail infrastructure provides little opportunities to avoid conflict with other users. Examples might include no shoulders, high speeds, high traffic levels, and/or no place to ditch if a need arises.

Touring
A long distance route that uses the most direct cycle friendly route between start point and end point. Touring routes should inform users of camping, bathroom, and bike repair opportunities.

Not Bike
A route placed on Bikely not meant to be a bike route. Examples might be driving directions, a short walk, cross country ski route.
